Eating Tortoise Head

As I was thinking about superstition and Africa, I remembered when my brothers and I fought over the head of a tortoise. Being the second son in the family, I was not entitled to the head of any animal slaughtered in my homestead let alone my younger one. The practice in my Igbo culture is that the head of any animal belongs to the first son of the household, and I, being the second was only entitled to the jaw. But in this occasion under reference, we had to break custom and struggle to control the head of the amphibian. Previously, my elder brother had stealthily thrown away the snake-like head and none of us gave a hoot. But on this particular occasion we were all eager to take a bite off the animal's head at all cost. Why?

It so happened that we had got wind of the fact (from grandmother) that those who ate the tortoise head don't cry. And true to the notion elder brother had forced himself and ate the head under contention. Next day in school, he tried out a trick that got him six strokes of the cane and he shed no tears. It works! It was the holiest time on record!

All the pupils in the school started fishing for tortoise in the rivers and streams.

WE WANT OUR CHANNELS TELEVISION

The way and manner some government agencies in Nigeria go about their businesses is quite alarming. Even after militocracy has been replaced with democracy, some of these agencies act arbitrarily. Just last night, many of us got home early to watch our favourite TV channel - Channels TV for the news of the day but no signal was coming from the station. This was quite unusual judging from the precedent of the station. It was not until later in the night that some of us got to learn that the television station was shut same night by some overzealous personnel from Nigeria State Security Service (SSS). Reason: the station was alleged to have broadcast that the president may resign on health grounds. Now, what is the big deal about a president contemplating resignation on health grounds? Many people, groups, have severally and collectively made worse remarks about the health and office of the President without any such drastic action meted on them. Nigeria Guild of Editors and civil right groups should rise to the occasion and take up issues with the government and its various erring agencies.
No matter the source and veracity of the message, the broadcast does not warrant Channels to be barred from operation. To show a sign of responsibility, key officers of the station should be questioned and sanctioned by the appropriate body if found liable. It is not the primary duty of the SSS to go about in a commandeer manner, beating up media workers at will and locking up media houses. The SSS should preoccupy itself with working towards addressing the situation at the Niger Delta.
We ask that our beloved Channels TV should be reopened immediately and the SSS sanctioned for not going through the appropriate channel.
